Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2017

Where: The Photographer’s Gallery, Soho

When: Until 11 June, 2017

This small exhibition brings together an international selection of images entered for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, which promises one photographer £30k in winnings. The four artists shortlisted are:

  • Sophie Calle
  • Dana Lixenberg
  • Awoiska van der Molen
  • Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs

Although the exhibition is not very big, you will need time to fully appreciate each image and take in the message behind it.

The Photographer’s Gallery says that this year’s shortlist of entries “celebrates established photographic narratives alongside experimental and conceptual approaches to documentary, landscape and portraiture.”

The exhibition will be on show in the UK until 11 June, after which it will be presented at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt from 29 June until 17 September. The winner will be announced at a special awards ceremony during the exhibition run.

Child’s Play

Where: The Foundling Museum, Bloomsbury

When: Until 30 April, 2017

Mark Neville is the artist in question for the Child’s Play exhibition, which brings together a collection of photographs, a symposium and a book. He is renowned for his socially-focused projects. This one in particular aims to generate debate around the nature of child’s play. Taking play as it's main focus, it advocates “improved provision for this universal right, as identified by the UN in the 2013 General Comment on Article 31 (the Convention on the Rights of the Child).”

The exhibition shows photographs of children at play in very different environments, from Port Glasgow to North London, as well as the war zones of Afghanistan and Ukraine. Images capture beautiful moments of spontaneous play even in the most unfavourable of environments.

His book of images seeks to start discussions on provisions for child’s play in the UK. A symposium on 20 March will examine the  importance of spaces for play. Issues covered include the real and imagined barriers to play in UK cities today.
